Participating in cancer walks can be a great way to fight cancer and support those who are dealing with the challenges of cancer. Cancer affects all of us, either directly or indirectly.
If you don’t believe cancer affects you, consider these statistics. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 1.4 million new cases of diagnosed cancer will occur this year alone. In 2004, there were approximately 10.8 million people who had a history of cancer. Last year the cost of cancer was estimated to be over $200 Billion dollars! Cancer does affect all of us.
Cancer walks don’t only raise funds for worthy charities that battle cancer every day. They also help create an awareness and can even be used to recruit volunteers and advocates for the cause.
The purpose of each cancer walk is different. The money raised may go to a nonprofit organization that deals with many forms of cancer or one specific form. Decide where your passion is and get involved in a cancer walk that aligns with your passion.
Some of the more popular cancer walks include:
- Relay for Life (American Cancer Society)
- Breast Cancer 3-Day (Susan G. Komen for the Cure)
- Avon Walk for Breast Cancer (Avon Foundation)
- Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (American Cancer Society)
- Lung Cancer Walk (LUNGevity Foundation)
Search out a cancer walk in your area and get involved. You can play a part in wiping out the disease and supporting those who deal with cancer until it is only a memory.

Hello All!
I just 9 days I will be walking in the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3-Day. I will be walking 60 miles in just 3 days. I have been training for the last 9 months for this journey and have now come up short on donations. I have pledged to raise $2,200 in order to walk. So far I have managed to raise $745, which leaves me short by about $1455…
I have been touched by such strong women who have battle breast cancer and have found that this is the perfect opportunity to spread awareness and stand up for a cure. I do not want my children or grandchildren to endure this awful disease that claims so many lives every year. Our team captain for the walk is a breast cancer survivor and after battling chemo and radiation, she finally had a double mastectomy in order to rid the cancer. Because of her strength and inspiration myself and seven other women have pledged to walk with her on this amazing journey.
If anyone could please help by passing this message along to family and friends, and by making a donation to my Susan G. Komen webpage, it would be greatly appreciated. I only have a few days to come up with the remaining balance or I don’t get to walk.
Please feel free to check out my webpage sponsored by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3-Day. You can make a donation online or mail one in using the donation form provided on the website.

I wanted to participate in the 3 day walk for the Susan G Komen Foundation so support research for breast cancer but there is no way that I would be able to raise $2,300. I tried to find a few others but they also require you to fundraise over a thousand dollars just to participate.
Does anyone know of similar walks that are in Chicagoland that are less expensive?
You can check this site for further information.

I am thinking about registering to be a participant in my local 3-day Susan G. Komen Walk for a Cure. If you are not familiar it is a 60 mile walk in 3 days to raise money for breast cancer. They have one in my county every year and am thinking about participating next year. I have less than a year to train, and am pretty out of shape. It is the end of October and the walk is in August of 2009. Any suggestions for training and advice from prior participants, etc. Thanks.
I’m a 3 time 3 day walker. I’m considering doing it in ‘09 but I’m not sure yet. It’s really a wonderful experience and don’t let being out of shape deter you. A year is PLENTY of time to train. To be honest, I didn’t train for the last two I did and was able to finish just fine. I’ve stepped foot in a gym, although I am active. A lot of problems come from foot care – having properly fitting shoes, treating blisters. Also hydration and stretching are of upmost importance. At the end of the day you’re gonna feel 20 miles regardless of rather you trained or not. Get into the habit of walking and getting more active, which is good advice no matter what your future plans are. In the few months and weeks before the walk you need to get some long 10 and 20 mile training walks in so you can determine how your body responds and what problems you may encounter (shin splints, arch problems, ingrown nails, etc.) The 3 Day walk organizers are very supportive and there are often training walks scheduled in your area. It helps to join a team too.
As far as fundraising goes, I would register soon so that you have ample time to fundraise.
Good luck! I’d be happy to answer any other questions!

I’m walking 60 miles this weekend in the Susan G. Komen 3-day Breast cancer walk and it’s supposed to rain for at least one of the days
What can i put over my shoes to keep them from getting soaked?!?
I had thought of small trash bags, but i’m afraid they’ll just wear out on the bottom so quickly!
Thanks, everybody!
Congratulations! That is a great thing of you to do! I would invest in some gators. they are for hiking, and they should do a pretty good job of keeping the water out of your socks and shoes. Other than gators I don’t see much you can do other than change shoes at the halfway point. Even if you waterproof your shoes that will have no effect if it rains constantly.
