In 2008, the First Annual JDC and Susan G. Komen for the Cure Race for the CureĀ® was held in Sarajevo, bringing together more than 2,500 Bosnians – Muslims, Serbs, Croats and Jews – to walk and show their support for the fight against a common enemy: breast cancer.

Breast cancer survivors, high school students, government officials, and guest celebrities were among the participants from 18 different cities who attended the event and, for the first time, gave a public face to a disease that is still remarkably taboo in this European nation. Proceeds from last years event provided more than 600 free mammogram checkups for women without health insurance.

Women’s Health Empowerment Program
The Womens Health Empowerment Program (WHEP) is an innovative public education movement that conducts public education programs to encourage the early detection of breast cancer, as well as projects that create new psychosocial support services by and for women with breast cancer and their families. Working with local Non-Governmental Organizations and Government partners, these projects build leadership among women affected by breast cancer. They also focus on strengthening doctor-patient communication, and creating partnerships between and among patients and the medical and health communities.
