I just did the breast cancer walk and I was wondering if anyone knew of any general cancer walks that I could do with my mom next year to celebrate her beating cervical cancer. I would also like to host a 5 yr remission party for her. any ideas?

CONGRATS!! I would look on the american cancer society page, www.acs.com. They have listings for upcoming events and will have a place to look and see what is coming to your area or close to it. If not, then you can find your local area acs site. You can also go thru acs to find out how to sponser your own event. This gives you info on the details needed to do so.

A remission party is a wonderful idea. But keep it upbeat! You may also want to consider making this a fund raiser for the fight against cancer, it brings out the community, and makes them part of it, your mom is a survivor, and this is a blessed thing! If you want it to be family and friends, then go to your local chamber of commerce and see if there are any regulations reguarding the use of your local parks for a family gathering. Have a bbq, or a catered party. Play games, badmitton, horseshoes, and such. Being outdoors is the best thing than being in a stuffy restaurant, or hotel party room.

"Remission party"? You might want to run that idea by your mother before pursuing it. There is something profoundly disturbing about the whole concept. A "remission party" is disease focused and emphasizes the fact that there is no cure for cancer, only remission.

I would celebrate life instead. Your Mom’s birthday and Thanksgiving are the obvious choices for extra generous celebration. Other important annual milestones, such as Christmas, take on additional meaning for your family too.

Best wishes that your Mom enjoys a very, very long remission.

When my husband was celebrating his 5 year anniversary of remission, I threw a sort of a party. It wasn’t only a party. It was a 5K run and family walk. We are about to host the second annual Bill Crews Remission Run this January. It was so successful the first year, we just have to continue. I do not believe that the word remission brings profoundly disturbing thoughts in any way. It’s a reason to celebrate. My husband’s disease has no cure, but thankfully he is still in remission and we love celebrating that fact. At the same time, we are raising awareness and funds to continue to do research so that some day there WILL be a cure. If you want to see what we’re doing, visit our website at http://www.remissionrun.org. I highly recommend celebrating the beautiful gift of remission of cancer.
